Climb the highest peak in Montenegro: Bobotov Kuk/Durmitor National Park

Is it difficult to climb Montenegro's highest mountain? At 2,522 meters, Bobotov Kuk is the highest peak in Durmitor National Park.

Here you can find all information and GPS data.

The UNESCO-protected Durmitor National Park includes 48 2.000 metre mountains and 18 glacial lakes , known in Montenegro as "eyes." At 2,522 meters, Bobotov Kuk is the highest peak in the Durmitor National Park and officially the highest in Montenegro. There are two higher peaks in the Prokletije mountains, but they share the glory with Albania.

The mountain tour to Bobotov Kuk is the hiking highlight of the region and probably one of the most beautiful hikes in Montenegro.

Even the drive through Durmitor National Park is spectacular. The landscape reminds me of the Scottish Highlands. There are no trees, just vast expanses of grass, glowing golden in the evening sun, with stones scattered across them as if by a giant hand. Bizarre rock formations tower above us. In some places, the mountains here are so tilted up that they look as if the continental plates had just had a car collision.

My tip: The bizarre rocky landscape of the Durmitor Mountains is especially spectacular at sunset. You'll have a fantastic view around the Sedlo Pass.

Let's go! - climbing Bobotov Kuk

The next morning, we set off early. A ranger collects the entrance fee for the national park at the Sedlo Pass parking lot. Shortly after setting off, we have to be careful, as there's a spot where rocks can slide off the trail. We have to cross a gravel ledge, and rocks can fall from above.

Attention rocks!

Here, it's best to proceed cautiously to avoid rockfall. After the ascent to the first pass, the trail continues at a leisurely pace, gently up and down. We see chamois scrambling over the rocks above us. After about 4 km, the steep climb to the summit begins.

The final stretch involves a bit of scrambling. Some difficult sections are secured with steel cables, but this isn't a via ferrata. You'll definitely need to be sure-footed and have a head for heights. Even on the ascent to the summit, you'll have magnificent views of the surrounding valleys, Lake Veliko Skrčko Jezero, and the bizarre peaks all around. On the way back, you can either take the same route or turn right at the intersection shortly after the steep climb. This path will take you back to the R 16 road. It's best to download the GPS data I 've saved on Outdooractive .

The hike up Bobotov Kuk is a mountain tour. It should only be attempted by sure-footed hikers who don't suffer from vertigo. A good level of fitness is required. Lonely Planet says the hike takes 10 hours. We did it in just under six hours, but we were at that time pretty fit. There are a few scrambeling sections, some with wire ropes, but it's not a via ferrata. Rockfall may occur in some places. A helmet is recommended.

If you're unsure, it's better to book a mountain guide or join a group. And keep an eye on the weather. The summit is exposed, and you don't want to be there in bad weather. The climbing sections can be really dangerous in the rain.
