Bosnia Herzegovina Hajdučka Vrata Rock Window Hike

The Čvrsnica Mountains: Always stay cool
It's midsummer, and we're suffering from the heat in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Mostar, it's over 40 degrees Celsius during the day, so we escape to the mountains. We spend the night at Lake Blidinje at almost 1,200 meters and sleep through the night for the first time in a long time. Hiking is finally back on the agenda here, too. The air in the Čvrsnica Mountains is wonderfully fresh and clear . It's only about a 20-minute drive from the campsite to the starting point of the hike to the Hajdučka Vrata rock window.
The Čvrsnica Mountains are a dream for hikers. This tour can also be planned as a multi-day trip – there are several unmanned huts.

A hike that makes you bulletproof.
The hike to the spectacular Outlaw Gate, as the Hajdučka Vrata is also called, offers high peaks, beautiful alpine pastures, and a unique rock window surrounded by wild legends.
This hike takes us through the endemic Munika pine forests of the Čvrsnica Mountains.
I have uploaded the GPS data for this tour to Outdooractive .
Along the way, we pass valleys and small huts that were once inhabited by herdsmen in the summer, but have now been abandoned to the wilderness. The trail leads to one of the most beautiful destinations in the mountains of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hajdučka Vrata (Gate of the Outlaws) in Blidinje Nature Park , which has been protected as a natural monument of the country since 1985. Carved over millennia by wind, rain, and sun, the gate rises from the rock in a beautiful arch.
According to legend, the Hajduci (outlaws fighting for freedom in the Ottoman Empire) settled here and anyone who passed through the gate became bulletproof.
Don't miss out. The Drinaça peak
Just 500 m away is the Drinaça peak (2,038 m), from which you can overlook the surrounding peaks and deep gorges - a summit detour that you should definitely take.

Stay overnight
We stayed at Camp Blidinje , right on the lake of the same name. The campsite is very basic and there's no shade. But the location on the lake is absolutely beautiful, and the owner is very friendly. It's not so sweltering here, even in midsummer.
Best time
May - November.
